The Snake Pass
Snake Pass is an alternative name for the A57 - where it crossed the Pennine Hills and continued through the beautiful Peak District. It’s in very hand reach for those living in Manchester, offering some incredible views of the city. Crossing the high hills of the Peak District, Snake Pass can be found just on the Midlands border, running between Sheffield and Manchester.
Sticking true to its name, Snake Pass offers tight bends, winding roads, steep hill climbs and picturesque views at every corner. The name originates from the emblem of the Snake Inn, an institute which lies upon the road itself. The road was initially built as a toll road, as it was the most direct route between Manchester and Sheffield, however was soon taken over by the Woodheads Pass.
The Snake Pass passes through the Peak District and has been named as one of the 12 best road trips in the UK and Ireland. Pick up your Wicked Camper from London and take the drive north to the Snake Pass.
The Cat and Fiddle
Renowned as having more bends than any other road in the UK, the Cat and Fiddle is named after the Inn located at its summit - which also claims to be the second highest in Britain. Likewise with the Snake Pass route, the Cat and Fiddle offers amazing views over Manchester, as well as the Cheshire Plain and the Peak District Park. There’s heaps to look at, with photo ops at every corner.
Linking Macclesfield, Buxton and cutting through the heart of the Peak District, the Cat and Fiddle is also extremely popular with motorcyclists across the world. Due to the sheer amount of bends and winding roads, the route has gained a bit of a dangerous reputation! Don’t let this put you off though, it’s definitely a drive you have to do at least once.
A perfect roadtrip if you want to camp around the countryside, whilst keeping close to city life.
